Soil Screening

Soil Screening With Green Soils Company
At Green Soils Company, our goal is to repurpose and reuse soil whenever possible, to create a high-quality product. One of the best ways to achieve this is through a process called soil screening. Rather than writing off raw earth as unusable, there is a huge opportunity in filtering out and screening soil to create fine, healthy top soil.

We have years of experience in soil screening and work hard to make products that are refined, reworked, and recycled.

What Is Soil Screening?

Soil screening is the process of taking raw material and filtering it to create a pure, uniform product that can be used for growing plant life. Whether top soil is bogged down by rocks, roots, sticks, or other materials, it can typically be ground, sorted, and refined through soil screening.

How does Soil Screening Work?

Here at Green Soils Company, we use advanced tools and machinery to gather unusable soil, filter it, and create beautiful screened top soil.

Fine Screens

The most thorough and complex system is a machine called a fine screen. Fine screens filter product on an incline and result in topsoil smaller than ¼ inch. The one downside to fine screens is that they can’t handle large rocks or debris because of the delicate fine mesh materials inside.

Scalping Screens

Another option is a scalping screen. These robust machines are similar in size and appearance to fine screens but work on a decline. Scalps don’t produce a super fine product but can handle a wide variety of debris from metal construction materials to bulky concrete.

Trommel Screens

On a smaller scale, trommel screens are also a great option. A trommel screen is a cylindrical unit that filters out rocks, roots, sticks, etc. by rapidly rotating at an angle. Trommels are known for handling wet or sticky soil well.

Screening Boxes

A screening box produces less than 50 tons of topsoil per hour, but is still an effective way to create well-screened topsoil. These units sometimes resemble a large dumpster with a grate attached to the top for filtration.

Screening Buckets

The most versatile option for small soil jobs is a screening bucket. This is an attachment piece that can be fixed to an excavator to filter out large debris. Screening buckets are great for soil that is relatively uniform, aside from large rocks, concrete, or other materials.
